Location: Harrogate or Scarborough
The Role
Appropriate adults are required to attend the police station custody suite when a 10–17-year-old has been arrested and detained by the police. The role is to ensure that while in custody the young person's welfare needs are met and that they are supported to communicate with the police. You will support, advise and assist the young person, particularly while they are being formally interviewed. You will ensure the young person understands their rights, the importance of a solicitor, the police processes and the reason for his or her detention. You will attend the police interview to ensure that it is carried out fairly. There is always a YJS manager on call to provide support by phone.
What we are looking for
· Volunteers need to be 18 or over
· Have experience of working with or supporting young people or vulnerable adults (this could be in work, volunteering or personal setting)
· Able to respond to unplanned call outs at short notice
· Good communication skills
· Able to build empathy and rapport with young people
· To ensure that fair process is met throughout the child’s time within custody
· Able to maintain a non-judgmental approach and follow anti-oppressive & anti-discriminatory practices
· Able to adhere to NYC and Youth Justice Service policies and procedures during the course of all volunteering activities
· All Youth Offending Volunteers are required to complete an enhanced DBS check
· Availability Requirements:
· Harrogate: Available during the workday. Evening and weekend availability would be an advantage
· Scarborough: Available weekends including weekend evenings. Weekday availability would be an advantage
Additional Information
The role involves being called out to the Police Station usually at short notice during an agreed slot on the rota, and you will need to be able to get to Harrogate or Scarborough police station within an hour. We provide AA cover to the Police from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. There is never an obligation to attend. You will need to be able to make your own way to the Police Station and expenses can be claimed for required journeys.
