Apprentice Outdoor Education Tutor (Outdoor Activity Instructor – Level 3) 

 

North Yorkshire Council is excited to offer a fantastic opportunity to start a career in Outdoor Education! We operate two residential centres—Bewerley Park near Pateley Bridge and East Barnby near Whitby—specialising in personal development for young people through real outdoor education and adventure learning. 

 

We are recruiting two apprentices for 18-month positions starting in April 2024. Apprentices will earn a salary of £22,069.82 on the North Yorkshire Council Apprentice pay scale.

Welcome to the mountains, moorland, lakes, rivers, woodlands, caves, and Jurassic coastline of North Yorkshire—our classroom. Here, students embark on outdoor adventures so extraordinary they discover capabilities they never knew they had, all while learning to respect and care for the natural environment… creating lifelong memories along the way. Since 1940, we have been at the heart of authentic outdoor education in Yorkshire and Northeast England. Our two centres—Bewerley Park in the Yorkshire Dales and East Barnby on the Yorkshire Moors National Park coastline—offer a wide range of residential and day courses for primary and secondary schools, as well as higher education, youth, and adult groups. 

 

Tasks and Training Details 

 

The week starts with a team briefing, followed by preparation for the week ahead, including equipment checks and site readiness. Once schools arrive, most of your time will be spent delivering a dynamic programme of activities. Programmes typically feature a variety of adventurous outdoor experiences. After groups depart, time is spent tidying and preparing for the next arrivals. 

 

Your Responsibilities 

 

Engaging with school, youth, and occasional adult groups through a diverse programme of outdoor and adventure activities Preparing, tidying, and maintaining site equipment, resources, and facilities Collaborating with the teaching team and supporting other centre functions  

 

Training Opportunities 

 

You will develop personal skills in adventurous activities and learn to teach them to young people. There will be opportunities to gain training or qualification eitherin-house or through our delivery partner, Channel Training through nationally recognised courses, which could include:

PCV and MiDAS qualifications 

Outdoor First Aid 

Paddlesports courses

Mountain Bike Leadership 

Lowland Leader,

Hill and Moorland Leader 

Climbing Wall Instructor,

Rock Climbing Instructor 

Forest School Leader 

You will also gain valuable experience in the operation of large outdoor education centres. 

 

 

What We’re Looking For 

 

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about the outdoors and eager to inspire others. Successful candidates will demonstrate: 

 

Basic ability in adventure sports such as; paddlesports, climbing, mountain biking, sailing, caving, and surf sports 

Strong character, excellent social skills, and the ability to engage with people from diverse backgrounds 

A positive attitude, teamwork skills, and a willingness to learn 

Experience in customer service or working with children 

A full, clean driving licence 

 

Desirable: Basic instructional qualifications (we will support you in further development)
