Graduate Trainee: Climate Change, Northallerton

Salary: £25,183 - £28,163 (starting at £25,183 for first 6 months, second 6 months £26,409 and final 12 months at £28,163)

Grade E, F and G

Contract: 2 years fixed term as part of North Yorkshire Council graduate programme

Hours: Full time, 37 Hours per week

Our Team

 

The Climate Change team support delivery of the North Yorkshire Council Climate Change Strategy. This has 4 key themes:

 

  • Mitigation – reducing carbon emissions.
  • Adaptation – preparing for the changing climate.
  • Supporting nature to thrive.
  • North Yorkshire Council to achieve net zero emissions by 2030.

 

We do this by setting policy direction, working collaboratively with internal colleagues and external partners and supporting residents, communities and businesses to take climate responsible actions. The team develop and deliver projects, report on progress and engage with communities throughout North Yorkshire.

 

 

About the Role

 

Under the overall direction of your line manager and with support of colleagues on the team, you will undertake a wide range of project support activities relating to the council’s Climate Change Strategy.  You will undertake a range of project activities relating to research, and partnership development reporting back findings to a number of service areas.  These activities may include sourcing and analysing data, producing project reports, researching information and services, attending events and developing funding applications.  You will also undertake, with supervision, projects of a varying nature and complexity. 

 

The successful applicant will work predominantly with Climate Change team but with potential to support the Net Zero Delivery, Natural Capital, and Environmental Policy service teams to learn about a variety of areas including statutory Local Nature Recovery programmes and innovative programmes to attract private investment into natural capital and ecosystem services and renewable energy.  

 

The role will also have the opportunity to support with responses to government consultations, emerging environmental policy and high-profile areas which also has a high political interest. 

 

You will also be part of our council’s graduate development programme, providing you with access to our graduate network, coaching, and leadership and development opportunities. The post will be based at County Hall Northallerton, but with flexibility to work from home and in locations across North Yorkshire, sometimes at evenings and weekends.

 

 

About You – Essential Requirements

 

  • Educated to first degree level
  • Awareness of local government or the wider public sector
  • Knowledge of climate change causes and impacts 
  • Good IT skills working knowledge of data analysis techniques
  • Good understanding of how policies/procedures can be applied in practice to result in required outcomes
  • Problem solving skills and the ability to find innovative solutions.
  • Experience of project work
  • Flexibility and ability to work on own initiative
  • Ability to travel across the County.
