Salary: Unpaid
Hours: A full time placement of 37 hours per week for either 1 or 2 weeks, or part time (1-3 days a week) for a longer period.
Placement dates: Between July and October 2026
Placement suitable for: college or university students as well as adults considering career change or return to work
The Organisation
The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority was established as a new organisation in early 2024. It is a public sector employer with access to powers and funding to unlock transport and housing improvements, boost skills provision and help the economy transition to net zero for York and North Yorkshire. The Mayor also holds responsibilities in relation to Policing, Fire and Crime. The Opportunity
The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority is currently taking applications for work experience opportunity with Leadership Support Team. The team provides high quality administrative support to senior leaders within the Combined Authority.
This placement is based within a leadership support service that provides high level business and strategic support to senior leaders, including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The placement offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into senior leadership decision making within a fast paced, high profile environment.
During the placement, individuals may undertake a range of activities, including:
• Shadowing team members to understand how leadership support is provided on a day to day basis
• Observing meetings involving senior leaders, partners, and stakeholders to gain exposure to strategic discussions and governance processes
• Supporting projects, including research, briefing preparation, and progress tracking
• Conducting research and analysis to inform briefings, reports, or policy discussions
· Shadowing the Casework & Correspondence Officer and supporting with drafting documents, briefings, or correspondence for internal and external use
• Supporting administrative tasks, such as diary coordination, meeting preparation, and document management
• Liaising with internal teams and external stakeholders to gather information and support decision making
• Developing professional skills, including communication, organisation, discretion, and working in a confidential environment
The placement is designed to be both insightful and developmental, offering exposure to senior leadership while providing meaningful, hands on experience that supports the work of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and wider leadership team.
